AccuWeather First to Predict Historic 2016 Blizzard and Devastating Coastal Flooding 5 Days Ahead
Beginning on Monday, January 18, 2016, AccuWeather began warning the public for a life-threatening winter storm by explicitly stating that a blizzard was in the forecast for major cities including Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. By relying on AccuWeather, people knew days in advance of what to expect and had time to prepare for the historic situation that was going to unfold.
AccuWeather accurately highlighted the potential for extremely dangerous and nearly impossible travel conditions across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. On Monday, well before other forecasting outlets began using the word ‘blizzard’, AccuWeather specifically stated in a news story that the blizzard “could shut down highways and perhaps cause airports to close.” Thousands of flights were cancelled at major east coast airports and highways are still being cleared, almost two days after the storm’s conclusion.
“While others in the weather community were focused on naming the storm, AccuWeather was helping millions by forecasting the 2016 blizzard with Superior Accuracy™,” said Dr. Joel N. Myers, Founder, President, and Chairman of AccuWeather.
AccuWeather provided precise, consistent warnings of the storm throughout coverage during the week as the storm took aim on the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. AccuWeather was ahead of the storm days in advance, highlighting the historic snowfall amounts and coastal flooding as a result of the blizzard conditions that were to occur Friday and Saturday.
“AccuWeather provides the most accurate forecasts in the world, fulfilling our mission to personalize the weather so people can improve their lives. This was achieved once again before this historic, record-setting blizzard,” added Myers.
Consumers took to social media throughout the week as AccuWeather’s focused message and impacts of a forecasted blizzard were released and continuously mentioned as the storm unfolded, including:
- On Monday, Ryan (@ermacthegooner) stated “according to AccuWeather, Massive blizzard heading directly for us.”
- On Tuesday, Ken Sands (@kensands) stated “Thank you, @accuweather, for the succinct Saturday DC forecast: Blizzard.”
- On Friday, Con Weather (@CONWEATHER) stated “AccuWeather has been holding steady this entire storm.” Following that post, Brain Doyle (@brdoyle1996) added “It takes guts to stick to your guns. I respect Bernie [AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist] not waffling! Take a stand!”
- Following the storm on Monday, Naomi Herndon (@Naomi_Herndon) stated “@accuweather Just wanted to send a heartfelt Thank You to all the met’s who helped forecast this blizzard. You guys rock!!!”
